The Year in Brazilian Music (2020)

In the year that live concerts were all cancelled due to the pandemic, we relied even more on the digital platforms for entertainment. But music did not stop completely.

In Brazil, livestreamed concerts were the highlight of the year. Starting in April, several artists started these livestreams to entertain everyone at home and get donations for those affected by the pandemic. It quickly became extremely popular. In fact, the eight livestreams you will see below are among the 10 most viewed livestreamed concerts on YouTube worldwide this year. Musicians from every genre and style started to join this trend, but there was one genre that started it all.

Sertanejo singers were the first to do it. They created entertaining and well produced shows from their homes that were hours long. One of them actually reached 7 hours. Not only were they the sources of hilarious memes, but their songs also took over the country. 2020 was definitely the year of sertanejo and the lists you will see below clearly reflect this.

There were some big hits this year and artists that gained a lot of attention with their music nationally. Some of them include Barões da Pisadinha, Luísa Sonza and Manu Gavassi. But some focused also on foreign audiences.

Brazilian artists around the world

Internationally, it was also a good year for Brazilian artists. Many started to gain more attention. Especially in the Latin market. Artists such as Luísa Sonza, Giulia Be and Ludmilla all released songs with big Latin artists.

Alok, the biggest Brazilian DJ, also had a good year. After all, he became the 5th best DJ in the world by DJ Magazine. Also, he released remixes of popular international artists such as a Dua Lipa and the Rolling Stones. Not to mention collaborations with some of the biggest DJs in the world like Steve Aoki.

In the beginning of the year, before COVID-19 cancelled everything, Pabllo Vittar and Anitta were scheduled to play at Coachella. Even without this big exposure of their music, both had a good year internationally. Pabllo’s album “111” was selected by the British magazine Gay Times as one of the best of 2020. She also participated in several online livestreamed festivals.

As for Anitta, she had one of her biggest years. The highlight is the release of her song “Me Gusta”, a collaboration with the rapper Cardi B and Myke Towers. The song, which is in English and Spanish, debuted in the 90th position on Billboard’s Hot 100. In other words, it was Anitta’s first single to enter the chart. Additionally, she appeared in big TV shows such as “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”.

But the singer is not aiming just for the American market. In 2020, she featured in the song “Paloma” by Italian rapper Fred de Palma. It even included her singing in Italian. All of this while she still continued to release big hits in Brazil.

All things considered, music was very important to keep some sense of normalcy this year.
